Our founder, Jon Payne, started in the SEO world before Google was even the biggest search engine? That’s right, back in the early 2000’s the acronym “SEO” didn’t even exist, and the relatively few savvy internet marketers who were around would target search engines like Alta Vista, Excite, Dogpile and Yahoo! In 2003, Payne started Ephricon Web Marketing, one of the first true “SEO agencies”. The firm was originally based in Baltimore, MD and then moved to Charlotte, NC. The company was sold in 2013, after which Payne began turning his SEO chops to a small group of personal websites – as he had signed a non-compete relating to client work. Hence, Vocational Media Group was born.
By 2019, with the non-compete agreement not expired, Vocational Media expanded and began taking on clients (again) for our search engine optimization services. Initially it started with a few clients who Payne had worked with many years before, and then word-of-mouth began to spread. Nowadays we continue to work with both our own websites as well as client websites – applying the learnings from our own projects to benefit the companies we partner with.

As mentioned, we aren’t just an SEO agency. In fact, the majority of our revenue comes from our own web-based businesses – each of which generates the vast majority of its income from organic search traffic. We aren’t just consultants, we’re doers.
